Why we read by Moon sign, not sun sign

Gochara, counted from the Moon sign

In Jyotish (Vedic astrology) the week is read by gochara: where each graha stands, counted from the sign the Moon was in when you were born, your janma rashi. The classical texts give each graha's results by that count. Saturn passing the 12th, 1st and 2nd from the Moon sign is Sade Sati; the Moon in the 8th is Chandrashtama; Jupiter helps in the 2nd, 5th, 7th, 9th and 11th. These pages follow them.

The signs are counted against the stars, in the sidereal zodiac with the Lahiri ayanamsa, so your Moon sign here can differ from a Western horoscope's. A Western sun sign is a different thing again: if it is the only sign you know, find your Moon sign above.

Should I read my Moon sign or my sun sign?

Your Moon sign. These readings follow gochara, the classical way of reading transits, which counts every graha from the sign the Moon was in when you were born, your janma rashi. Read from your Western sun sign, every graha would be counted from the wrong place.

How do I find my rashi?

Use the finder on this page: give your birth date, time and place, and it works out the sidereal sign the Moon was in. If you don't know your birth time and the Moon changed sign that day, it names both signs and the moment it changed.

Why is my Vedic sign different from my Western sign?

Vedic astrology counts the signs against the stars (the sidereal zodiac), while most Western astrology counts them from the spring equinox (the tropical zodiac). The two now stand about 24° apart (the Lahiri ayanamsa is 24.23° this week), so a position in the first 24° or so of a Western sign falls in the sign before it here. A Moon sign is also a different thing from a sun sign in either system.

Which days does this week cover?

Monday 19 to Sunday 25 October 2026, in Indian Standard Time. The week runs Monday to Sunday, and the page moves on to the coming week early on Sunday, so the week ahead is here to read on the day before it begins.

    What is Chandrashtama?

The hours when the Moon passes the 8th sign from your Moon sign: about two and a quarter days in every month. The tradition keeps new beginnings out of them. Each sign's page gives this week's times.

Is this horoscope read for my own chart?
