Worked out for Chennai (IST) from the actual sunrise and sunset: the Sun's upper edge at the horizon, with standard refraction, by the observed reckoning (Thirukanitham, திருக்கணிதம்), not the Vakya one. The day from sunrise to sunset and the night from sunset to the next sunrise are each cut into eight equal parts, named by the weekday table above. Gowri Nalla Neram is the good parts, Amirtham, Uthi, Laabam, Dhanam and Sugam, less anything in Rahu Kalam, Yamagandam or Kuligai. Why do Tamil calendars show different times?
Printed calendars work from a fixed 6 am to 6 pm day, the same in every town. This page uses the actual sunrise and sunset of the city you choose, so its times can differ by several minutes, and abroad by an hour or more.
Which Gowri periods are good?
Amirtham, Uthi, Laabam, Dhanam and Sugam are good. Rogam, Soram and Visham are avoided. A good period loses any part of it that falls in Rahu Kalam, Yamagandam or Kuligai.
What is Nalla Neram today in Malaysia or Singapore?
Choose Kuala Lumpur or Singapore from the city list at the top: the times then follow that city's own sunrise and sunset. Copying Chennai's times is about an hour off in Kuala Lumpur, where the Sun rises about an hour later by the clock.
